What Hiring Managers Look For in This Vertical

Licensure and specialty certifications first

RN, NP, MD, DO — and specialty certifications (CCRN, CEN, CNOR, etc.) — are hard filters. Put them in your header or directly below your name.

Patient population and unit type

ICU, ED, OR, med-surg — the unit type and patient population you've worked tells a hiring manager more than your job title. Be specific.

Quality and outcome metrics

HCAHPS scores, infection rates, fall rates, readmission rates — if you've moved these numbers, say so. Healthcare systems hire for outcomes, not just experience.

Leadership scope for management roles

Number of FTEs managed, budget size, and span of control are the first questions a CNO or CMO will ask. Answer them on your resume.

The IO7 Framework

The IO7 Framework Applied to Medical Careers

In healthcare, Institutional Influence — your licensure, specialty certifications, and the reputation of the systems you've worked in — is the first filter. Pair that with strong Experiential Influence (patient outcomes, quality metrics, leadership scope) and Relational Influence (physician relationships, nursing leadership networks) and you have a profile that stands out in a field where most candidates look identical on paper.

What This Industry Actually Hires For

Healthcare hiring is credential-first and specialty-specific. RN licensure, specialty certifications (CCRN, CEN, CNOR), and Magnet hospital experience are screened before a hiring manager reads a single bullet. After credentials, they're looking for patient outcomes, unit metrics, and leadership scope — the size of the teams you've managed, the complexity of the patient population you've served, and the measurable impact you've had on quality indicators.
